“My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not a victory for any party or any class. It’s a victory for the great British nation as a whole. We were the first on this ancient island to draw the sword against tyranny. After a while we were left all alone against the most formidable military force ever seen. We were all alone for a whole year.’ – Winston Churchill
“Humility must be the measure of a man whose success has been bought with the blood of his subjects and paid for with the lives of his friends.” – General Dwight D. Eisenhower
“At 11 a.m. this morning, the cruellest and most terrible war that has ever scourged mankind came to an end. I hope we can say that on that fateful morning all wars came to an end.’ – David Lloyd George
“In these unforeseen circumstances, we must remember those who gave their lives so that we can see them today. We must remember them how this is safe. Please let us celebrate in a fitting manner, raising a glass to thank those who made a sacrifice and let us also remember those who stood on the front lines today.” — Councilor Mark Spencer, Champion of the Newport Armed Forces
“I remember lines of unknown people crossing arms and walking down Whitehall and we were all swept away in torrents of happiness and relief.” – Queen Elizabeth II
It was undoubtedly Churchill’s day. Thousands of King George’s subjects crowded outside the palace all day, chanting incessantly ‘We want the King’ and cheering hoarsely as he and the Queen and their daughters appeared. But when the crowd saw Churchill, there was a deep, throaty, almost awe-inspiring roar. – Molly Panter-Downes
“We are eternally grateful to all of our brave men and women who have answered the call. To defend our country in its time of need and to give us peace in our time.’
– Graham Smith, standard bearer of the Royal Regiment of Wales
VE Day not only marked the end of years of struggle and loss for Britain, but also the beginning of peace, prosperity and security for the next 75 years. Those who lost their lives made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. It is therefore vital that, as the Royal Navy of today, we not only remember that sacrifice, but embody the same sense of loyalty, courage and duty as our predecessors.” – Cdr Philip Harper RN Commanding Officer, HMS Severn Royal Navy
