Utah reports nearly 9,000 new COVID-19 cases


For the second day in a row, the state hit a record high in the number of new cases reported.

The Utah Department of Health reported 8,913 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, marking the second day in a row the state has seen a record high number of new cases reported in a single day.

Thursday’s number amounts to 1,666 cases more than reported on Wednesday and 4,207 cases compared with the record a day earlier (4,706 cases), which Utah reached on December 30, 2020.

The state Department of Health on Thursday also confirmed 13 more deaths from COVID-19, including a 1-14 year old girl in Salt Lake County.

One of the deaths reported Thursday occurred before December 6 and was only recently identified as being caused by COVID-19, the health department advised. The rest – 12 deaths – were reported yesterday.

Vaccine dose administered in the last day / total doses administered • 12,984 / 4,602,066.

Cases reported in the past day • 8,913.

Cases in school-age children • Children in grades K-12 accounted for 1,247 new cases announced Thursday – 14% of the total. There are 401 cases reported in children aged 5-10 years; 271 cases in children 11-13; and 575 cases in children 14-18.

Vaccination status • Health workers do not have or immediately announce the vaccination status of individuals who test positive, are hospitalized, or die. They calculate the overall risk ratio of these outcomes depending on vaccination status, listed below.

Tests reported in the past day • 22,345 people were tested for the first time. A total of 41,155 people have been tested.

Deaths reported in the past day • 13. (UDOH did not say in the incident which deaths occurred before December 6 and which deaths were reported the day before.)

Number of hospital admissions reported in the past day • 530. That number is 35 more than Wednesday’s report.

Total so far • 672,567 cases; 3,868 people died; 28,050 hospitalizations; 4,355,667 people were tested.
