Mitchell, Gobert keep Utah constant in last season’s Western Conference semifinal rematch
Donovan Mitchell scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half, Bojan Bogdanovic made six 3-pointers and the Utah Jazz beat the Los Angeles Clippers 124-103 on Wednesday night to their eighth straight win.
Jordan Clarkson scored 21, Rudy Gobert had 20 points and 17 rebounds, and Bogdanovic added 20 points. Utah shoots 53% away.
Marcus Morris has 24 points and Eric Bledsoe added 21 points for the Clippers, who have had a 4-match winning streak.
The last time the Clippers and Jazz met on the field, Los Angeles took a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semi-finals and eliminated the Jazz with an unprecedented comeback of 25 points or less in the series-ending game. .
While Kawhi Leonard also missed that memorable playoff and is yet to recover from right knee surgery, the Clippers already have Paul George and Nicolas Batum. This time around, LA doesn’t have those two main players either.
Mitchell scored 13 goals in the third half and scored a 9-0 winner to give the Jazz an 87-70 lead on his 3-pointer.
The Clippers fought back in single digits several times but could never get closer than seven. Jazz, usually Mitchell, have an answer each time when they can get inside a basket or disc for an open perimeter shooter.
Jazz put the game out of reach as Bogdanovic hit two 3s corners around Gobert’s tackle on Morris. Clarkson added a 3-pointer and Gobert had an impressive trailing hit to make it 119-97 for the Jazz with 3:49 left.
The Jazz are playing as well as they have had all season, including winning all four on their recent run. Mitchell has led Utah in scoring in all eight games of the current streak, averaging 29 points and five assists in that span and shooting 54% away.
Jackson sparked a 12-0 Clippers game in the second half with 3 points, but the Jazz took a 65-59 lead in the first half thanks to Bogdanovic’s 4 for 4 goal from 3 points and Clarkson’s 14 points.
