Salt Lake Tribune journalists participate in KCPW’s weekly news roundup.

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Cydney Carradonna, left, and Mirna Ibarra cuddle on Sunday, May 8, 2022 during a Mother’s Day social at Iowa House. Iowa House is a weekly queer community started by Amanda Madden and Jade Swayne. hosting a family-style dinner for other queer Utahns in their backyard. The experiment has turned out to be a success, and now there is a waiting list for those hoping to join the community they created.

Utah Prosecutor David Leavitt is calling on Sheriff Mike Smith to resign, saying the top cop may have tried to embroil him in a “ritualistic” sex ring investigation. Hate crimes against the LGBTQ community in Utah nearly doubled in the past year, with a big spike during Pride Month. And the Iowa House, “an experiment in progress,” offers queer Utahns a place to be themselves over Sunday lunch.

At 9:00 a.m. Friday, Salt Lake Tribune reporters Paighten Harkins, Jessica Miller and Saige Miller, along with news columnist Robert Gehrke, join KCPW’s Roger McDonough to discuss the week’s top stories.

Stream “Behind the Headlines” every Friday at 9 a.m. on kcpw.org or tune in to KCPW 88.3 FM or Utah Public Radio for the show. Join the live conversation by calling 801-355-TALK.
