A total of 22 people were injured in a bus accident after a massive snowstorm blanketed much of the Rocky Mountain states on Monday morning.

The bus overturned around 4:30 a.m. on Interstate-84 near Tremonton, Utah. It had traveled from Boise, Idaho to Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Utah Highway Patrol said the accident was caused by winter storms and slippery road conditions. “When the bus changed lanes to the left and the driver lost control,” Utah officials said. “The bus went off the road to the right and rolled over on its right shoulder.”

The bus carried 33 passengers and the driver. A total of 22 were injured in the accident, including 2 who were hospitalized in critical condition.

The storm swept across the Rocky Mountains on Monday as it blanketed much of the West Coast in ice and snow, including parts of drought-stricken California.

Heavy snowfall in the Sierra Nevada brought about 3-4 feet of snow in and around the Lake Tahoe area.

Also the California Department of Transit approximately 70 miles of Interstate-80 closed between the towns of Truckee and Kingvale due to near-zero road conditions and visibility.

A storm is considered a blizzard if it sustains winds of at least 35 miles per hour with snowfall.

Other parts of the upper Midwest, including most of North Dakota and Minnesota, are expected to experience severe winter storms and ice storms.

Elsewhere in the country, forecasters warned of an increased risk of tornadoes developing from the storm in an area around Natchitoches, Louisiana.

The NWS is warning people in the area, which includes parts of Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, to prepare for high winds and hail Tuesday and Wednesday.
