(CNN) – People who want to fly from China to the United States will have an easier time starting Friday.
Special Covid testing rules for travelers from China and its administrative areas, introduced on January 5th a major outbreak of cases in Chinawere officially lifted Friday at 3 p.m. ET, according to a news release from the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.
had a source said CNN earlier this week that the CDC order is expected to be dropped as early as Friday.
This means travelers departing from China, Hong Kong, Macau and some designated airports elsewhere will no longer need to undergo a pre-flight test to receive a negative result or provide documentation of recent recovery from Covid-19 in order to attend Board an airplane to go flight to the USA
The CDC said in its Friday press release that the order was issued because of “concerns that Covid-19 cases are rising in the United States [People’s Republic of China].
“At that time, mitigation measures were largely unknown in the PRC and there were significant gaps in data and information on cases, hospitalizations and fatalities.”
Why has the order been canceled now?
The CDC said it now has more confidence that things have gotten better in China.
“Currently available epidemiological data from global datasets and modeling results suggest that the COVID-19 surge experienced by the PRC has returned to baseline levels,” the press release said.
The CDC also said no variants of concern have surfaced from China.
The agency said it will work with other agencies to monitor “travel patterns” between China and the US and “adjust its approach as needed.”
The new, revoked order was signed by Rochelle P. Walensky, Director of the CDC. Click here to read the full order.
