US lawmakers launch probe into impeachment of Joe Biden | US News

The Republican-led House of Representatives rejected an attempt to quickly impeach President Joe Biden – but voted to open an investigation to remove him from office.
Hard-line conservatives forced a vote Thursday to impeach Biden. The resolution, introduced by Rep. Lauren Boebert, charges Biden with “serious felonies and misdemeanors” related to his handling of the US-Mexico border.
Lawmakers voted 219 to 208 cross-party to refer the resolution to two congressional committees for consideration. Democrats had hoped to abolish the measure.
The resolution alleges that Biden orchestrated an “invasion” of the United States through soft immigration policies. Two charges were referred to the Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees: abuse of power and dereliction of duty.
Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy rigged the vote, essentially to appease far-right lawmakers while avoiding officially backing the impeachment effort.
“Well, people just all talked about it,” McCarthy said of considering the resolution. “We carry out the investigations where the information tells us.”
Boebert said her aggressive pursuit of the impeachment vote was aimed at discouraging other members from making “difficult decisions.”
“I’m a sophomore in Congress and I learned very early that nothing happens in this city without violence,” she said.
Democrats accused Republicans of trying to create a diversion from ex-President Donald Trump, who was indicted in the classified documents case and was indicted twice during his tenure.
“Today they are dishonoring this House of Representatives and dishonoring themselves by introducing this ridiculous impeachment resolution,” said Rep. Jim McGovern, senior Democrat on the House Rules Committee.
“This body has become a place where extreme, outlandish, and wacky issues are passionately discussed and important ones are not discussed at all.” In short, the Republican Party is a joke.”
Biden spent Thursday meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
