HEALTH and beauty trends come and go and many of us have probably tried one at some point.

But experts are now warning against a dangerous practice that could seriously damage your health.

A recent trend, posted by various users on TikTok, shows people trying to “bleach” their freckles off their skin.

Lighter skinned people are more likely to have the markings.

Sun exposure causes these dark brown spots on our skin as a result of over-pigmentation.

They’re often harmless, and in recent years there’s been a resurgence of people trying to recreate the look – with some even drawing their own freckles.

But trends are changing, and there are plenty of videos showing people using household cleaners and chemicals to remove these stains.

Skin expert Sam Cinkir said there are very few treatments to prevent freckles.

Este Medical Group CEO said any treatment should be handled with caution as it could seriously damage your skin.

“There are a few treatments to remove freckles, like laser technology or cryotherapy, but we’re seeing a lot of people using social media to promote at-home treatments like lemon juice, honey, sour cream and yogurt.

“It’s unlikely that any of these home remedies will do any major damage to your skin, but they aren’t scientifically proven and those ‘miracle cures’ you see on social media should be taken with a pinch of salt.

“The best thing you can do is speak to a qualified professional and explore treatments that are scientifically backed and administered by a trained professional.”

One user claimed toothpaste and petroleum jelly mixed together could get rid of freckles, while others praised tomato juice.

In severe cases, some users have encouraged the use of household cleaners.

What Signs of Melanoma Do You Need to Know?

The most common sign of melanoma is the appearance of a new mole or a change in an existing mole.

Most experts recommend using the simple “ABCDE” rule to look for symptoms of melanoma skin cancer, which can appear anywhere on the body.

  • Asymmetric – Melanomas usually have two very distinct halves and an irregular shape
  • Edge – Melanomas usually have a nicked or ragged edge
  • Colors – Melanomas are usually a mixture of two or more colors
  • Diameter – most melanomas are usually more than 6mm in diameter
  • Enlargement or bump – a mole that changes in size over time is more likely to be a melanoma

In women, the legs are the most common specific site for melanoma skin cancer in the UK.

Men are more likely to see melanoma on their torso—the back or upper body.

All of these products can cause skin irritation as they are not intended for this type of use.

Chemicals in particular can cause damage such as burns and skin rashes.

Sam added that freckles can go away on their own if you avoid direct sunlight.

He explained that the best cure is prevention – in the form of sunscreen and appropriate clothing to block the sun’s rays.

But if a freckle starts to change size, shape, or color, it’s important to see a doctor as it could actually be melanoma, which is also caused by sun exposure.

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer in the UK and around 16,700 people are diagnosed in the UK each year.

It is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, accounting for around four per cent of all new cancer cases.
