UMN requires proof of vaccine or negative test for fans at sports games, other events

The University of Minnesota will require proof of immunizations or a negative coronavirus test for entry to indoor events at all campus sites beginning January 26.

The policy, announced Friday, applies to sports games and other university events, as well as third-party events where at least 200 people attend.

By at least February 9, the public must present proof of vaccinations or a negative test taken within 72 hours prior to the event.

Students, faculty, and staff can enter the campus simply by showing their school ID because the school is highly compliant with U.S. vaccine regulations.

President Joan Gabel in her announcement Friday cited the continued increase in coronavirus cases caused by the highly contagious omicron variant, as well as the decision by the mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul on Wednesday that guests of some restaurants and bars will have to show they have been vaccinated starting January 19.

“This temporary approach to public gathering spaces is another step that, at a critical time, will hopefully ease the strain on the care system,” Gabel told students, faculty and staff. take care of our excess health and benefit all of us.

U’s spring semester begins on Tuesday.

Huntington Bank Stadium on the Twin Cities campus is supposed to host Foo Fighters concert in August, but the band moved the show to Bank of America Stadium because U refused to ask fans for proof of vaccinations or a negative test.
