Ukrainian winter harvest threatens, farmers may not transport grain, causing uncertainty

Ukrainian farmers are still uncertain about transporting grain, which could increase volatility in global markets.

Roman Grynyshyn is the founder of a Ukrainian non-profit organization that provides resources to growers and says the harvest will be in less than 3 months. “World food security is deteriorating because we have this commodity but nobody is coming. We can neither harvest nor export that. That’s a really big problem.”

He tells Brownfield there are several logistical challenges, such as closed ports and unusable roads.

Grynyshyn says some railways transport grain into the European Union, but rail systems change at the border, forcing some producers to take matters into their own hands. “Farmers just bring it to Europe in trucks. The lines at the border, they’re terrible. You can wait in line for at least 10 hours to cross the border. But that’s to the border and then to the port and that’s just a load like 23 or 25 tons.”

Grynyshyn says it’s a solution, but not enough because Ukraine normally exports about 20 million tons of grain every year.

He says European ports are congested and supply and demand have put shipping prices under pressure.

“We need to squeeze grain into their capacity with that amount. First of all, this creates difficulties in finding labor and the ability to (load) these ships and barges off the train.

He says many farmers may not harvest their crops because of these problems.

That “World to Reconstruct Rural Ukraine” is a nonprofit organization that meets with farmers, agribusinesses, and university extensions of land grants across the United States to provide resources to producers.
