Ukrainian missile attack targets Russian ammunition depot – Boston News, Weather, Sports

Kyiv, Ukraine (AP) – A Russian ammunition depot was apparently attacked by Ukrainian forces overnight, resulting in a massive explosion that was captured on social media.

The southern command of Ukraine’s military said the rocket attack targeted the depot in Russian-held Nova Kakhovka, some 55 kilometers east of the key Black Sea port city of Kherson, also occupied by Russian forces.

Video on social media showed a massive explosion. The nature of the strike suggested that Ukrainian forces were using US-supplied multi-launch High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to attack the area.

Russian news agency Tass offered a different report, saying that the target was a mineral fertilizer storage facility that blew up and that a market, hospital and houses were damaged. Some of the ingredients in fertilizers can be used in ammunition.

Ukrainian authorities also said Russian fire hit the southern city of Mykolaiv on Tuesday morning, hitting two medical facilities and residential buildings. Four people were injured in the shelling, Mykolaiv regional governor Vitaliy Kim said on Telegram.

Air raid sirens rang out in the western city of Lviv and other areas of Ukraine early Tuesday morning as Russian forces continued to advance.

Russia continues to make “small, incremental gains” in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, according to a British military intelligence briefing on Tuesday heavy fights prompted the province’s governor last week to urge its 350,000 remaining residents to move to safer locations in western Ukraine.

But many in Donbass, a fertile industrial region in eastern Ukraine made up of Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, refuse – or are unable – to fleeeven though dozens of civilians are killed and wounded every week.

The death toll in a Russian rocket attack that struck an apartment building in eastern Ukraine on Saturday has risen to 34. The head of the Donetsk regional military administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, made the announcement on social media, saying nine wounded were recovered from the building in Chasiv Yar.

The British intelligence briefing said Russia had captured the Ukrainian town of Hryhorivka and is pushing further towards the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk in Donetsk province.

“Russian forces are likely to maintain military pressure on Ukrainian forces as they regroup and regroup for further offensives in the near future,” the intelligence briefing said.

However, Russia may be relying more on private forces like the Wagner mercenary group to avoid a general mobilization, the British said.
