Ukraine are one win away from a place at the World Cup in Qatar after beating Scotland 3-1 in Hampden on Wednesday night.

It was an emotional evening for the Ukrainians, playing against the backdrop of the ongoing war in their home country, but they didn’t let that distract them, clearly the better side for most of the competition.

Scotland struggled to even be at their best in Glasgow and apart from throwing bodies forward in the latter stages they didn’t really bother their visitors.

Andriy Yarmolenko got behind the Scottish defense in the 33rd minute and calmly threw the ball over Craig Gordon to put Ukraine ahead.

Benfica’s Roman Yaremchuk doubled the away team’s lead just four minutes into the second half when he went over his mark far too easily on the edge of the six-yard box to nod home.

John McGinn had the perfect opportunity to halve the deficit in the 67th minute when he headed an easy chance wide of the post and really drained the Scots in the fight to get back into the competition.

The home side got back into the game, however, when a shot from Callum McGregor somehow went over the line after terrible treatment from goalkeeper Heorhiy Bushchan.

A desperate leap down the line by a defender seemed to clear the ball but the referee gave the goal and Scotland were just a goal behind, with 11 minutes of 90 to play.

They huffed and puffed but lacked quality throughout the evening and it was Ukraine who looked more than anything for another counterattack.

That’s exactly what happened in the closing moments, as Artem Dovbykat broke loose and hammered the ball past Gordon with the final kick of the game.

The game ended 3-1 and Ukraine travel to Cardiff on Sunday to face Wales in the final play-offs, with the winners taking their place in Qatar.
