If it didn’t really feel like winter was really upon us, now it is.

Ice, heavy rain and high winds will hit Britain from today, meteorologists have warned.

A yellow wind warning is currently in place for areas in South West England and South Wales, with gusts of up to 65mph on land and 80mph in coastal areas.

The warning is in effect until 6pm tonight, while a yellow rain warning covers most of Northern Ireland until midnight. And Scotland was on a yellow ice warning until 9.30am today.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “We have two lows coming towards the UK tonight and tomorrow.

“The first is towards the North West of Northern Ireland and the second is coming towards us in Ireland and South West England.

“They will bring very wet and windy weather.”

He said there was also a risk of strong winds in coastal areas of Cornwell, Devon and south Wales.

“Going forward, one thing to keep in mind is that there’s a little bit of uncertainty about that, so different models are doing slightly different things with the trace of that low pressure,” he added.

“Particularly on your parts of the coast in Cornwall, Devon and South Wales there is a risk of some significantly strong winds.”

Alex said another weather warning could apply later today across west Wales and Northern Ireland.

“There could be significant rain,” he explained.

“We don’t have a warning yet. But you know, it’s not out of the question.”

He warned those traveling to airports – Cardiff and Exeter airports in particular – should allow extra time as they could expect disruptions on their journey.

Temperatures can also drop as low as -4C in some parts of the country today.

“Towards the north east of the UK it’s getting pretty cold,” added Alex.

“So maybe temperatures around minus four. And that brings with it the risk of ice and fog, so it’s difficult driving conditions there.’
