Khamzet Chimaev and Gilbert Burns stole the show UFC 273, although two title fights were on the agenda in Jacksonville as Aljamain Sterling defeated Petr Yan to retain the bantamweight championship.
Chimaev remained unbeaten in his career but passed by far the toughest test he had yet faced, battling past Burns in three rounds to a unanimous decision win.
All three judges gave Borz the fight 29-28 and there were no complaints from the Brazilian, although Burns landed many memorable shots and Chimaev rocked a few times.
The Chechen left Burns a bloody mess with his own punches but failed to dominate him on the ground or possibly chose not to dominate him like he had his previous UFC opponents.
The scrap caught the attention of The Rock, who tweeted: “Holy shit. What a fight!! Burns/Chimaev.’
In the first of two title fights, Sterling bested Yan and made a split decision to truly become the undisputed UFC Bantamweight Champion.
The first clash between these two ended in a DQ win for Sterling, leading to Yan claiming he’s still the true champion, but the Funkmaster has now put an end to that claim.
It wasn’t without debate when UFC President Dana White said he gave Yan the fight by three rounds to two, but two judges gave it to Sterling by that margin and that’s all that matters.
The Russian finished the fight strong, but Sterling’s dominance on the floor in rounds two and three seemed to do enough for him to retain the belt.
In the main event, Alexander Volkanovski defended his featherweight title in a dominant manner against Chan Sung Jung, finishing the fight in fourth.
The Aussie was a firm favorite to win the fight and proved why that was, comfortably knocking the Korean zombie to the feet with leg kicks and boxing.
Things were looking really bad for the zombie, but he consistently showed off his huge chin like he has done throughout his UFC career.
Referee Herb Dean intervened to stop the fight early in the fourth with both men on their feet in a superb stop from the veteran official, with Zombie looking like a completely beaten man.
Elsewhere on the map, Mackenzie Dern scraped a split decision win over Tecia Torres and Ian Garry continued his unbeaten career with a unanimous decision over Darian Weeks.
The night’s fight went to Burns and Chimaev, while Volkanovski shared the night’s performance with 44-year-old heavyweight Alexey Oleynik, who handed Jared Vanderaa with a scarf hold in the first round.
