The Utah Department of Transportation has made it official — it wants to build an eight-mile gondola through Little Cottonwood Canyon.

UDOT’s decision, released Wednesday, means the department can officially move forward with the nacelle plan, a decision that has been made for years. The nacelle would likely take years to build.

The agency released a preliminary plan last August, identifying the gondola as the best solution to address long-standing traffic problems in the gorge. The decision sparked thousands of public comments, which UDOT reviewed before releasing the final decision on Wednesday.

This is breaking news that will be updated.
