MELROSE, MASS. (WHDH) – Officials from the Middlesex Attorney’s Office and the United States Postal Service say two teenagers have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery of a postman in Melrose.

Two 16-year-old Somerville men were arraigned in juvenile court on Wednesday, accused of using “an apparent firearm and knife” to rob the trucking company on Saturday, December 10, according to a press release from prosecutors Marian Ryan.

The publication described how an investigation by Melrose PD found that two men had been on the steps of a house in Orchard Lane when the victim first arrived. While attempting to deliver mail to one of the homes, officials said the youths allegedly approached the carrier as she was returning to her vehicle and pointed an airsoft gun at her while she displayed a knife.

When the two demanded “postal property” with the weapons shown, the forwarder complied with the request. The suspects later fled the scene of the crime.

After interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence and reviewing video footage from the crime scene, Melrose police were able to identify the two alleged suspects.

A week later, officials said it was December 18 when police saw what they believed to be a suspicious vehicle in the area of a USPS collection box in Melrose.

“The youths were in the vehicle allegedly in possession of mail and stolen mail,” the press release said. “Investigators further learned that the two men allegedly heard about the idea of stealing mail with checks on TikTok trends and other places to make money.”

Further details of the court case were not given due to the exclusion of the juvenile court case.

The Attorney’s Office noted that in addition to the Melrose Police Department, the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), the Massachusetts State Police assigned to USPIS, and the State Police assigned to the District Attorney also assisted in the investigation. Somerville Police were also credited with assisting in the arrest.
