Two arrested for the murder of a footballer at a nightclub on Boxing Day

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of stabbing soccer player Cody Fisher Birmingham nightclub.

Police said today: “A 22-year-old was detained at an address in Birmingham city center just after midnight, while a second man, aged 21, was arrested in London.

“You are being questioned on suspicion of the murder of Cody, who was stabbed to death on the dance floor at Crane nightclub on Adderley Street just before midnight on Boxing Day.”

Fisher, 23, was fatally stabbed just before 11:45pm on the dance floor at Crane nightclub in the Digbeth area while out with friends.

He was reportedly stabbed when a group of people approached him.

Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead 30 minutes later.

Fisher was a semi-professional footballer who played for Stratford Town FC who play in the Southern League Premier Division Central.

West Midlands Police DCI Ian Ingram said: “Cody’s family and friends are devastated by what has happened and we will continue to work to give them answers.”

His partner Jess Chatwin tweeted: “You don’t deserve any of this. I’m so sorry this happened to you, my baby, please come home.

“I love you forever, Cody Fisher.”

Clubgoers described the incident as “a disaster waiting for us,” citing what they saw as lax security checks.

An 18-year-old man from Wolverhampton said: “Me and the friend I was with were not once asked to clear out our bags, even though mine were full. I was wearing cargo pants with full pockets.

“They didn’t even touch me while they searched me, they just followed the outline of my body with their hands and then tapped me to say to go ahead.

“Of course you want everyone to have a good time and enjoy themselves (but) when we walked in I said to my friend, ‘This is the worst search I’ve ever seen’.

“Anyone could have brought anything in.”
