Many Twitter users were confused and frustrated this weekend when the message “Rate Limit Exceeded” appeared on their screens.

Elon Musk, who acquired the platform last year, tweeted that temporarily limiting how many new tweets people can see or post was to “combat extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation.”

Also, users could no longer send direct messages, and before long #Twitterdown and RIP Twitter were trending.

The final temporary step initially meant that verified accounts were limited to reading 6,000 posts per day, unverified to 600, and new unverified to 300.

Shortly after, Elon, 52, who is also CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, increased those to 10,000, 1,000 and 500 jobs, respectively, and it’s not yet clear when those restrictions will be lifted.

So, what can you do when you are confronted with the “Rate Limit Exceeded” message on your Twitter?

let’s find out
