Twitter, Instagram Block Kanye West For Anti-Semitic Posts – Boston News, Weather, Sports

NEW YORK (AP) — Kanye West once suggested slavery was a choice. He called the COVID-19 vaccine “the mark of the beast.” Earlier this month he was criticized for it wears a White Lives Matter t-shirt to his collection at Paris Fashion Week.

Now the rapper, legally known as Ye, is once again embroiled in controversy – banned from Twitter and Instagram over anti-Semetic posts, which the social networks called violating their policies on Sunday. In a post on Twitter, Ye said he will soon go “Death Cheat 3 vs. JEWISH PEOPLE,” according to Internet archive records, apparently referring to the US Defense Preparedness Scale known as DEFCON.

“You guys have been toying with me trying to blackball anyone who defies your agenda,” he said in the same tweet, which was posted late Saturday and removed from Twitter.

The comment drew a sharp rebuke from the Anti-Defamation League, which called the tweet “deeply disturbing, dangerous and anti-Semitic.”

“There is no excuse for his spreading white supremacist slogans and classic anti-Semitism about Jewish power, especially with the platform he has,” it said in a statement.

Ye officials did not respond to requests for comment.

Ye has alienated even ardent fans in recent years, teasing and long tinkering with albums that haven’t had the critical or commercial success of his earlier recordings. People close to him including ex-wife Kim Kardashian and her family have stopped publicly defending him following the couple’s bitter divorce and his disturbing posts about her recent relationship with comedian Pete Davidson.

But the social media lockouts cap a tumultuous week for Ye, even by his standards. On October 3, he wore a “White Lives Matter” t-shirt when he debuted his latest clothing line in Paris, drawing sharp criticism. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, White Lives Matter is a neo-Nazi group.

Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs posted a video on Instagram He said he doesn’t endorse the shirt and urged people not to buy it. According to media reports, Ye posted a screenshot of a text conversation with Diddy on Instagram and implied that he was being controlled by Jews.

Adidas said on Thursday that it had placed its lucrative sneaker deal with Ye in the test. And on Saturday, Instagram suspended posts from the rapper entrepreneur for content violations. His Twitter account was suspended on Sunday, just a day after he returned to the platform after a nearly two-year hiatus and was welcomed back by Elon Musk.

“Welcome back to Twitter my friend,” posted Musk, who last week renewed his $44 billion bid to buy Twitter after a months-long legal battle with the company. The billionaire Tesla CEO has said he would make Twitter a free speech space and ease restrictions, though it’s impossible to know exactly how he’d run the influential network if he took over.

The social media guidelines for Twitter and Instagram prohibit posting offensive language.

Yes’s Twitter account is still active, but he won’t be able to post until the suspension ends. Sanctions from Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, may include temporary restrictions on posting, commenting, or sending direct messages. Such muzzles can last as little as 12 hours or days, depending on how serious the violation was or how often the account has otherwise broken the rules.

Although a step below from a full account ban, enough of these restrictions can eventually result in a person being kicked off the social media platforms – temporarily or, in rare cases, permanently.

As of Monday afternoon, no account had posted anything suggesting that Ye is still restricted. Neither Twitter nor Meta would say how long they will restrict Yes’s accounts — or how close he might be to being banned or even permanently booted.

Ye has made a name for himself less for his music and more for sparking controversy since 2016, when he was hospitalized in Los Angeles due to stress and exhaustion. It was later revealed that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

That year, he ended a show in Sacramento, California after just four songs but not before a 10-minute tirade about Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Hillary Clinton, Mark Zuckerberg, radio and MTV. West soon decided to scrap the entire tour.

He’s regularly made headlines since then: running for president, continuing his ongoing feud with Taylor Swift, causing an uproar when he suggested slavery was an option, publicly defending R. Kelly, and once charging Marilyn Manson and DaBaby with him took the stage as they confronted sexual assault and allegations against homosexuals.

Yes’s involvement aside, social media restrictions like this incident have been largely routine for the platforms. Twitter took action against nearly 4.3 million accounts between July and December 2021, the latest available data from a twice-yearly transparency report. About 1.3 million accounts were suspended in the same period.

But with Twitter likely on the verge of being sold to Musk, advocacy groups fear the platform will revert to the days when it was known as a dead end for abuse and hate, particularly for women, minorities and members of the LGBTQ community. Although hateful content still exists on Twitter, the company has spent years trying to identify and remove threats, abuse, racism, violence, and other harmful content.
