Trevor Noah is leaving The Daily Show after 7 years

All good things come to an end. Trevor Noah will leave The daily News after hosting the late night program for seven years.

“We are grateful to Trevor for our amazing partnership over the past seven years. As there is no timetable for his departure, we are working together on the next steps,” Comedy Central said in a statement diversity on Thursday September 29th. “As we look ahead, we look forward to the next chapter in the more than 25-year history of The daily News while continually redefining culture through perceptive and hilarious social commentary, helping audiences make sense of the world around them.”

Noah revealed his exit plans to the audience during Thursday’s taping in New York City.

“Seven years have passed since we started The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. This week is our anniversary,” he told the crowd in a video posted via The Daily Show Twitter. “And one of the overriding feelings I’ve experienced is a feeling of gratitude. The journey we took together was wild. … There’s so many people bringing this thing together. I want to say thank you for seven amazing years. It was really wild.”

He continued, “It was absolutely amazing. It’s something I never expected. Everything we’ve been through – the Trump presidency, the pandemic. After seven years I realized that my time was up. But in the most beautiful way. I loved hosting this show. It was one of my biggest challenges. It was one of my greatest joys. I loved figuring out how to make people laugh when the stories were particularly cheesy, even on the worst of days. … But after seven years, I feel like it’s about time.”

The South African native ended his speech by promising he wouldn’t “disappear” and shared that he misses “learning other languages” and “going to other countries and putting on shows” before addressing the audience last time for his loyalty over the years.

Noah started his run with The daily News after working as an on-air correspondent for the program in 2014. Heh took over the former moderator John Steward less than a year later. (Amy Schumer, Chris Rock, Ludwig CK and Amy Poehler Everyone reportedly said no to the offer at first.)

“I have to say, the first two years were awful — and it was awful because I took on one of America’s most beloved institutions,” revealed Noah diversity in July 2020. “And even though Jon Stewart had handed the reins to me, it was essentially a year where people told me I shouldn’t be doing the job and that I wasn’t worthy of sitting in that seat. And I kept believing in it. You step into this new role and you do a new job and most of the first year was just trying to stay afloat.”

The comedian added that beginning his time on the program was mostly focused on “finding my footing” and “trying not to get cancelled,” adding that in some ways it was akin to learning “how to an airplane flies while the airplane flies. ”

However, when Noah took over, he grew the series until it became the #1 late-night show in digital and social media podcast downloads, and thereafter joined a new generation of viewers donald trump was elected President of the United States in 2016.

“Satire works best when it has a purpose,” Noah told The Los Angeles Times in July 2021. “When Trump came into office, the show immediately had its relationship with the White House. and it [was] an interesting relationship like Harry Potter had with Voldemort.”

It’s not clear when the comedian will finally say goodbye, or if Paramount Global has begun searching for his replacement. However, the show regularly works with a large group of “correspondents”, including Desi Lydic, Roy Wood Jr., Ronnie Chiang, Michael Costa and Dulce Sloan who could be possible successors.
