Rescue workers found another body under the rubble of a train that derailed in southern Germany on Friday, bringing the total number of deaths to five.

Rescue workers continued to search for survivors this morning after the disaster in the scenic mountainous region north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria.

A regional train on the way from the Alpine ski area to Munich came off the tracks, causing at least three wagons to tip over.

Authorities said five people were dead and 44 injured, including three passengers who are being treated in hospital for serious injuries.

A police spokesman said a major operation to free people from the rubble had been completed.

“As far as we can tell, everyone has been rescued from the train,” the spokesman said, adding that removing the overturned carriages “would certainly take a few days”.

However, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said on Saturday it was possible bodies were still trapped under the rubble and said about seven people were still missing.

About 140 people were on board when the accident happened.

After several failed attempts, cranes managed to lift at least one carriage of the train that rolled off the tracks on Saturday.

The public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.

Regional and national politicians visited the site and expressed their dismay.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he was shocked by the news and pictures of the accident.

“Our sympathy goes to the relatives, the injured, whom we wish a speedy recovery,” he told the broadcasters RTL and ntv.

The Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder said on Saturday during a visit to the scene of the accident that it was an “unbelievable incident”.

“We very much hope that there will be no more deaths,” he said, adding that such an accident is always a shock and a “blow to the heart.”
