A BABY tragically died after another child climbed into his bed and fell asleep on his bed in a tragic accident.
Noah McCarthy-Bowerman was just four months old when another tot – who can only be known as Child A – lay on top of him.
Mum Courtney Bowerman, 25, woke up around 7am to find child A – who is under 10 – giggling and mumbling in the crib at the foot of her bed.
The horrified mother found the dead unresponsive and paramedics rushed to the scene on May 2.
Cornwall’s chief coroner, Andrew Cox, found the death accidental during an inquest yesterday.
He said “happy and healthy” Noah tragically died of a sudden unexpected death in infancy in a co-sleeping environment.
Mum Courtney said she suffered from sleep deprivation the night Noah died, adding: “I curled up on the side of my bed and passed out, I was exhausted.”
She fed Noah after he woke up screaming at 3:04 a.m. and put him back in his crib at the end of her “overcrowded” bed at 4:00 a.m.
At 7 a.m. she woke up to find that he was unresponsive.
Courtney insisted that Child A must have climbed into Noah’s crib, but didn’t know how long they were there.
The coroner told the Truro Inquiry that there was no evidence of intent from Child A or anyone else.
He stressed that Child A should not blame himself for this tragedy later in life.
Mr Cox said: “Most likely Noah’s death was caused or contributed to by Child A superimposing him.
“It’s a desperately sad finding.”
Courtney told the Truro Inquiry she had smoked cannabis the night Noah died – but denied claims she was drunk.
She also denied a suggestion that Noah died after falling asleep with her on a sofa downstairs in their house.
Toxicology tests showed no alcohol in her system 14 hours after the end of the evening, but there was a high concentration of cannabis.
Police said no action would be taken against Courtney.
