Top Gun: Maverick will not be streaming when it hits theaters next weekend

Top Gun: Maverick is garnering rave reviews and is slated to hit theaters on May 27 (although early showings will get it in some theaters in the days leading up to). But the COVID-19 pandemic, with its profound disruption to film release norms, has created much confusion about how long fans have to wait for a new film to hit a streaming service.

Where is Top Gun: Maverick streamed?

Top Gun: Maverick expected to stream on first Outstanding plus. The film is distributed by Paramount Pictures, which is owned by the same parent company as Paramount Plus.

When is the Top Gun: Maverick streaming release date?

Paramount has yet to confirm a streaming release date for the Top Gun sequel. But understanding the company’s past practice can help make educated guesses about when it will be available to stream.

For films similar to Top Gun, Paramount has tended to give them a minimum of 45 days in theaters exclusively before making them available for streaming on Paramount Plus. If Top Gun: Maverick is on a 45-day schedule, it will be available to stream around July 9th.

But Paramount doesn’t make movies available to stream like clockwork. Jackass Forever, which hit theaters in February, landed on Paramount Plus almost exactly 45 days after its theatrical release, and so did The Lost City in March. But another more recent Paramount film — Scream, which hit theaters late last year — lasted about a week longer, at around 53 days.

And Paramount may choose to keep Top Gun: Maverick in theaters longer because it’s a mega-budget, blockbuster-style film; These so-called “tent pole” films depend more than other films on box office success. Some rival distributors are already doing the same thing with their tentpoles: Disney has kept Marvel movies only in theaters for more than two months, almost as long as pre-pandemic theatrical exclusives lasted.

Will streaming be “free”?

Paramount Plus has never charged an additional fee to watch a movie through its service. And even though it has two different tiers, there’s never a movie behind the higher-priced membership tier.

However, Paramount Plus requires a paid subscription, so nothing on the service is literally free — unless you’re viewing it while signed up for a free trial. By default, Paramount Plus offers all new members a seven-day free trial.
