The France international has been a mainstay of successful Chelsea sides since joining from Leicester in the summer of 2016.
However, Kante has struggled to maintain his fitness over the course of the past 18 months and looked like a shadow of the player who refereed the latter stages of the Champions League midweek last season.
The 31-year-old suffered the shame of being substituted at half-time as the Real veteran helmed the show and provided the platform from which Karim Benzema could showcase his goalscoring abilities.
“I hate to say this and I’m not sure, but did we consider N’Golo Kante’s end to be the greatest or one of the greatest midfielders of the last decade?” Cascarino posed on talkSPORT.
“I’ve been concerned for a while about the number of injuries he’s sustained and he’s always running everywhere.
“He covers every blade of grass on the pitch and he does it brilliantly.
“He’s one of my favorite midfielders because he’s one of the most selfless players you’ll see. It’s all for the team with N’Golo Kante.
“I feel like he was physically exhausted, he looked burned out.
“Mid the week he faced a 37-year-old in Modric, Kroos and Casemiro who weren’t all as mobile as he was and still I thought he was struggling.
Is it an injury and can he come back? I hope he can, but I’ve been watching N’Golo for the last three months and I was like, have we seen the best of him, is he starting to fade? I hope I’m wrong because he was a great player.’
