Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has defended asking £87 for a steak dish after a furious backlash over the move.

The MasterChef star was blasted for the pricey sirloin steak and chips at his pub The Hand and Flowers in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, after the 49-year-old slammed the eye-watering price tag on the meat, which is served with onion rings, Béarnaise sauce and triple cooked fries.

However, Tom – who owns six restaurants in London, Manchester and Buckinghamshire – has defiantly confessed to his decision to sell expensive meals following the backlash that comes as millions of people across the country struggle to make ends meet during inflation .

He said: “You’re not helping raise children by shaming successful people because I’m one of those people.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you want to drive a Bentley, it costs money.

“If you’re on a budget, there’s a well-managed Ford Focus around the corner and I’m fine with that,” he added to the Times.

The Michelin-starred chef (who estimated he’d lost £4million to £5million during the pandemic) explained that the steak came from a cow that’s been grass-fed for two years and that the meat was then butchered , slaughtered and hung will take another month.

He added he will only be able to get 10 steaks, which cost £25 each, before he has to pay his staff and energy bills, which he says will add £35 ahead of a further £18 in VAT.

The chef claimed he was “lucky” to make a 10% profit of around £9 on the dish, which he said would help replace essentials like cutlery and ovens.

He also insisted he was angry about the cost of living crisis, but said people making “good money” shouldn’t be “punished” in the meantime.

“It pisses me off that there are more food banks than McDonald’s in this country,” he told the publication.

“But I also think: never punish people who make good money, who have achieved a great lifestyle. You’re not helping feed kids by making successful people feel embarrassed because I’m one of those people,” adding it was “better” for him and Marcus Rashford to share budget-friendly recipes online, ” as for example just giving away £50,000′.

Tom came under fire for his expensive dish in September last year after he posted a photo of a sign mocking the price of famed Instagram chef Saltbae’s steak shortly after the opening of Nusr-Et Steakhouse London.

He captioned the pic: “Saltbae steak: 630 pounds. Some peace and quiet: priceless.’

However, supporters were quick to point out the high prices at his own establishments, pointing to the steak dish and its £62 fish and chip prices.

In May, Tom also defended a visit to a local food bank he made for a series about cooking on a budget after his actions were described as “extremely patronizing”.
