Tom Hanks donates autographed typewriter to Arlington store – Boston News, Weather, Sports

ARLINGTON, MASS. (WHDH) – A local resident and his business recently received a special gift from Tom Hanks in the form of a typewriter autographed by the actor himself.
Tom Furrier owns a typewriter repair shop in Arlington. Speaking to 7NEWS, he said he was shocked and grateful after receiving the gift, which even included a letter typed by Hanks.
Skinner owns Cambridge Typewriter. He said he was familiar with typewriter sending and receiving.
When he received this package, he found the autograph “Tom Hanks” scrawled on the top of the typewriter.
Hanks at one point has a history of gift machines from his personal collection told the New York Times that he owned hundreds of typewriters.
To save some space, he started sending them to friends, co-stars, and even strangers.
Back in 2017, Hanks mailed a typewriter to a family in Wellesley who had written him a letter.
“He’s a huge supporter of people who love to type and of typewriter shops themselves,” Furrier said. “He is unbelievable.”
The letter accompanying the typewriter states that Hanks hopes Furrier can breathe new life into the machine.
Skinner said he’d heard of Hanks sending typewriters to smaller shops like his, but never thought he’d be so lucky.
He said while they’re not for everyone, the old machines still have a magic.
“I’ve had editors here saying, ‘If you give me two manuscripts — one on a computer and one on a typewriter — I can tell you which one was typewritten because it was better.’
Kürschner said he plans to put the gifted typewriter up for sale in his shop.
He also said that Hanks’ letter will be included in the sale.
