The 26-year-old English singer-songwriter suffered injuries including a broken ear and ruptured eardrum, as well as problems with his previously fractured jaw.

A statement on his social media said: “In the early hours after Tom’s New York show, he was the victim of an unprovoked assault and robbery outside a Manhattan bar.

“Tom is currently in hospital being evaluated by doctors for his injuries including a broken ear, ruptured eardrum and problems with his previously fractured jaw.

“Nevertheless, Tom is in good spirits but needs to make a temporary recovery while doctors assess his ability to continue touring.”

The message from his management continued: “Tom is keen not to disappoint anyone but we have made the precautionary decision to reschedule the show in Washington to a later date tomorrow, details to follow.

“We will update on future shows should changes need to be made. We want to thank Tom’s incredible US fans for their support and understanding.’
