Toddler killed after cement truck crashed into vehicle over overpass in Houston – Boston News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) — An infant was killed on Friday after a cement truck went over an overpass in Houston and landed on the car it was traveling in, officials said.

The 22-month-old child’s twin sister survived along with the two adults who were in the vehicle, Lt. Simon Cheng of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for Vehicle Crimes told CNN affiliate KHOU.

“The adults were able to get out of the vehicle and save the girl – one of the twins. Unfortunately, the young twin could not be extricated from the vehicle, which was crushed by the cement truck,” he said.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said deputies responded to a “major accident” at the intersection of Wood Forest and East Sam Houston Parkway on Friday afternoon. He said the truck lost control, “went over the overpass and landed on a vehicle with four occupants.”

The driver of the Ford pickup was identified as the twins’ 54-year-old grandmother, while the passenger in the passenger seat was their mother, Cheng said.

The two women and the girl were taken to a local hospital in stable condition, according to the sheriff.

The driver of the cement truck suffered possible injuries but refused to be taken to a hospital, Cheng said.

She “showed no signs of impairment or intoxication” and there were no signs of speeding, he said. “She is dismayed by the incident and is cooperating with the investigation.”

Cheng said investigations into the crash are continuing. “We want to conduct a full investigation to see why she lost control or a possible factor on the bypass.”
