The Blues have had an unusually slow start to their summer business but are expected to ramp up activity significantly over the next few weeks.
Talks between Tuchel and new owner Toddy Boehly, who is stepping in as acting sporting director following Marina Granovskaia’s departure, took place this week and there is now a plan to strengthen a squad that has recently lagged behind Liverpool and Manchester City Season.
Chelsea will look to strengthen their forward line once Romelu Lukaku’s loan return to Inter is completed, although they could resist the temptation to recruit an equivalent replacement.
Raheem Sterling is a prime target but the England international wants a guarantee that first-team football fell victim to Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy last season.
After the prominent departures of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rüdiger, the focus is also on strengthening the defensive. Interest in Jules Kounde has waned somewhat but news that Matthijs de Ligt wants to leave Juventus is a welcome boost.
Tuchel could also try to cover the full-back as the futures of Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta remain uncertain and Lens’ Jonathan Clauss has been targeted.
“The key is basically working with Tuchel to find the best players available,” a source told The Telegraph.
“We really want to make sure we have a good defence. We have depth in midfield. We’re not desperate for a thorough striker.
“Fortunately, there are reasonable options on the market right now to satisfy fans’ desire to be competitive. I think it’s a combination of moves and there’s five or six that we’re going to try to do.
