A customer who received a $25 amazon gift card at a restaurant on TikTok is going viral, sparking a debate in the comments section about the restriction policies.
Captioned “Holiday broke us,” the 13-second video by @kaittwest shows the man she was dining with placing a $25 gift card on the bill. The video has received more than 88,300 views since it was posted on Monday. “He asked if he could make money with Amazon gift cards,” notes the text overlay and text-to-speech effects.
The receipt shows a total bill of $95.24, which means the $25 gift card is worth 20% more than the $17.19 tip. Although some commenters were concerned that the gift card had already been redeemed, the code on an Amazon gift card can only be used once, so an intact card means its value is intact.
The clip caused a huge rift in the comments section.
Some commenters pointed out that $25 is 20% higher than the tip.
“That was really generous,” said @tarbuckscoffee.
“As a waitress, I love it! Lol $25, which is more than 20%,” said @the_ggs.
Others criticized the move, noting that gift cards don’t pay bills.
@ Jess11simone says: “No, as a waitress, I need non-Amazon bills.
“People actually go out to eat when they have no money,” says @user1774190931545.
Unlike tips, which are officially counted as taxable wages, “gifts” up to $13,000 are not subject to tax. This means that in addition to receiving a 23% tip, the employee will not be taxed on the gift card.
