TikToker shares what she did at Starbucks and Hooters, sparking debate

Salary transparency is a key trend on TikTok, as workers across industries go viral on the platform after revealing how much they’re paid for their jobs. TikTokers are having viral success by showing off how much money they’re making at places like Twin Peaks, Waffle House and more — and now Texas-based TikToker Laura (@_laura_dlg) is joining by posting how much she’s at earned various jobs.

Her video, which shows the jobs she has worked and how much she earns from each job, has already racked up over 2.9 million views, sparking discussion and debate on the platform.

In summary, she says she made $9.79 an hour at Starbucks, $7.25 an hour (the state minimum wage) while working at a haunted house, $10 an hour at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, $11 an hour at Bath & Body Works, $14.50 an hour at HEB and $2.13 an hour (plus tip) for their work at Hooters and Bayou City Wings.

$2.13 an hour is the federal minimum wage for tipped workers according to the US Department of Labor. It should be noted that if a tipped worker is paid less than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour for his work, the employer must compensate him to make up the difference.

In later videos, Laura explains how much she actually made from her typed work.

In this video, she explains that it’s difficult to say how much she earns on a specific day of work, as the amount varies greatly from shift to shift. She then posted another video with her tips on a Saturday night.

On a night she describes as “slow,” she earned a $190 tip.

In the comments, she also noted that 1% of her tips are taken from credit cards for the bartenders, with her average tips being $50-$100 on weekdays and $150-$300 on weekends.

With those numbers, Laura makes well above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. While some servers make a significant amount of money from tipping, the national median hourly wage for tipped workers is just “$10.22 compared to $16.48 for all workers,” according to the Economic Policy Institute.

Viewers were surprised by their earnings, even with tips.

“The 2.13 is robbery,” wrote one user. “You earn at least the state minimum wage AND the tips.”

“These comments make me feel bad about my $12 Imfao,” added another.

“And I’m complaining about my frigging $16,” agreed a third.

Above all, users were surprised at how few employers in the US had to pay tips

“I can’t believe wages are legal in America,” said one.

The Daily Dot contacted Laura via TikTok comment.
