TikToker says dad went from grill to McDonald’s owner, heated debate

A TikToker has sparked a controversy after it was revealed in a viral video that his father went from baking job at McDonald’s to becoming the owner of a location.

Responding to a follower’s comment that read, “And people say you can’t make a career out of McDonald’s,” said Stephen Patula (@patulafamilymcdonalds), who has nearly 1 million followers, ” You can absolutely make a career out of McDonald’s. He went on to reveal that his father started out as a grill manager and is now the owner/operator of the McDonald’s he works for.

“Our operations director, supervisor, and general manager all started off as crew,” explains Patula in the video. “You can make a career out of anything, you just have to start somewhere.”

The video has gained more than 653,000 views since it was posted on Monday. The comment section immediately erupted into a debate, with many saying that “times have changed”.

One person wrote, “Just because someone could make enough wages 30 years ago as a crew member and work their way up doesn’t mean you can now.”

In 1990, the minimum wage in the US was $3.80; 31 years later, the national minimum wage has only increased to $7.25.

However, others agree with Patula. “McDonald’s does not hire outside the company for higher positions. Everyone starts at the bottom,” said one.

The comment to which Patula responded came from a video in which Patula said he loves his job, even after working there for 14 years. In the video, he explains that he became a manager at the age of 14 and that his title is now area supervisor. He said he oversees two McDonald’s locations in Ohio. Patula also mentioned that he’s on an “owner-operator program.”

The Daily Dot has reached out to Patula for comment.
