A TikToker has gone viral after sharing a video of various white men donning cornrow braids during a Caribbean cruise.
Nae Morant (@nae.morant2) uploaded to TikTok. She films two white guys with cornrows and uses a TikTok sound in the background that says, “Look at those bitch braids.”
“They infested my cruise,” the creator added in the caption.
The video has received more than 174,000 views and hundreds of comments since its release on March 31, 2022. Most of these comments were users urging TikToker to make fun of their fellow travelers.
“Just let her live, ma’am. You’ll never see her again, so why are you worried about her hair?” one user commented.
“I swear I feel like blacks are obsessed with whites, they’re having fun,” wrote another viewer.
While it’s common for Caribbean destinations to offer braiding as a service to cruise ship passengers, many believe it is a form of cultural appropriation. The term, according to Britannica.com, refers to “members of a majority group who adopt cultural elements of a minority group in an exploitative, disrespectful or stereotypical way”. “However, in the past, black people have been discriminated against for traditionally sporting black hairstyles, including locs,” the online encyclopedia continued. “As a result of systemic racism, black people face consequences for wearing dreadlocks that non-black people don’t.”
Still, several users in the comments argued that this situation was nothing like that.
“Lol some research locks have been part of every culture since the beginning of time, it’s ok not everyone can be smart,” claimed one user.
“Braids and dreads have nothing to do with culture. Every culture as far as we can tell had them,” replied another viewer. “It has nothing to do with black culture.”
Other users accused the creator of trying to “gatekeep” cornrows. Another user even went so far as to leave a racist comment criticizing black people for wearing woven fabrics.
“At least they rock it with their real hair unlike all of you,” they wrote.
This isn’t the first time a TikTok has gone viral for showing white cruise ship passengers wearing pigtails. User @zoluuuuu posted a similar TikTok on March 12 and received millions of views. However, contrary to @nae.morant2’s comments, some users agreed that the act was an example of cultural appropriation. In the end, due to the backlash, @nae.morant2 had to pin a comment clarifying that TikTok was just a joke.
“Bra all y’all dtm (doing too much) it’s supposed to be fun then just keep scrolling,” she wrote in the comment. “You’re all so sensitive.”
