One viral TikToker says she was charged what viewers described as a “crazy” fee for damages after booking an Airbnb for her friend. After that, her friend may not be her friend anymore.
User @ egooorls69 shared a screenshot of the additional bill, totaling a whopping $6,864, “for damages that may be caused during your stay.”
TikTok has amassed about 1.4 million views and nearly 50,000 likes as of Friday. Viewers were as shocked as the creator of TikTok.
“This is why I’m not helping anyone,” one viewer commented on the video.
“This is why I will never do it again, lol,” replied the creator commenting.
One viewer said the TikTok creator should make her so-called friends pay for damages: “Girls, if you don’t make them pay for it.”
But according to the creator, the friend could be in jail right now.
Some viewers questioned what this friend could do to receive the nearly $7,000 in damage fees, so the author shared a series of images sent to her by the Airbnb owner.
Apparently the friend who stayed in the Airbnb threw one of the couch cushions into the fire, leaving a large burnt hole in the corner of it. They also take ashes everywhere and let their dog do its business anywhere. On top of that, they signed the TikTok creator to the guest list.
“Yes, it was a pretty good time,” said TikToker dryly.
On the small bright side, the Airbnb owner was “very kind” about the whole thing, TikToker said.
“She understood that I rented it to someone else, and I didn’t,” she said. “But it’s still a super bad situation.”
Based on the images shared by TikToker, viewers don’t understand how the actual damage could amount to $6,864.
“That’s not 7k worth of damage, maybe 1k,” commented one viewer.
Another user said, “That baby is the couch from 1985, it’s worth $75.”
But some viewers pointed out that even if the actual damage doesn’t cost much to replace, Airbnb owners still have to make up for lost revenue while they repair or replace damaged items.
“The damage fee could be higher because she will lose the booking while it has to be fixed,” one person wrote.
Despite that, other TikTok viewers insist the damage fees are still too high, adding that’s why homeowners buy insurance.
“Girl, this is why homeowners have insurance policies. I work in insurance and we write to Airbnb rentals all the time. Let’s fight this”, one person commented.
Neither TikTok user @egooorls69 nor Airbnb responded to Daily Dot’s request for comment.
