A group has recovered more than $1,000 worth of products from the trash, thanks to the support of their influential neighbor, in a viral TikTok page posted Friday.
TikToker Sham (@bysham) said their neighbor threw out a “huge” box filled with unused beauty products from brands like L’Occitane and Anastasia Beverly Hills. They called their neighbor an influencer, but did not provide a name. Sham’s videotapes has reached over 88,000 views.
“We sneaked the box into our apartment,” the video says. “There’s a lot of new products in there.”
In the video, Sham writes down the price of each product they find. Expensive pieces include Kiehl’s Advent calendar, which retails for $99, and a $55 facial cream from Emma Hardie.
Including New York City sales tax, the retail value for “Trash Haul 2022” — as Sham and their roommates called it — totaled $1,350.
Many commenters were annoyed that their neighbor had thrown out so many products.
“That’s wasteful on their part,” wrote one user. “Thank goodness you found it. If they didn’t want it, they could have given it away. “
“Why not put it outside her door with a ‘free’ sign,” wrote another user. “.
Others take issue with the beauty industry sending free products to influencers.
“All these beauty companies are talking about sustainability – but we are not talking about PR giveaways and trash,” one user wrote.
“Why would companies give products to influencers who have no interest or need?” another user commented.
