TikToker denied the jury’s task because Roe v Wade was overturned

A TikToker says she refused to serve on the jury after she received a subpoena for “extreme emotional distress” from Roe v. Wade, which was knocked over, sparking debate in the comments.

In the video, posted by TikToker @eatwithlys on Saturday, the text overlay reads: “I was summoned to jury duty. As a woman in my 20s, I had to say this… am I wrong?”

She then shows a screenshot of the email she sent to the jury coordinator and explains why she would not participate in jury service.

“With ROE v WADE and other basic human rights that continue to be violated, I no longer live in a country that serves me. So I do NOT feel comfortable serving it,” the email said. Sbe continues, “To be part of jury duty at this point would put me in extreme emotional distress. Not to mention my opinion would be totally biased. I hope you understand and find another US citizen who is genuinely proud to be like that.”

The video is captioned, “This is the saddest email I’ve ever had to write,” and the text overlay on the screenshot reads, “Stay tuned to see if I’m despised.”

The video has amassed over 2.1 million views as of Tuesday, with many commenters believing her refusal to participate in jury duty robs her of the power to make a difference, despite being well intentioned.

“I totally understand, I protest in my own way, but I needed someone like you on the jury when I had my SA trial. Your voice counts here,” said one user.

“Good in theory, but imagine if this were a case where a woman was being tried for having an abortion. We need liberal POV!’ another wrote.

“As someone who works in criminal defense …. The jury’s job is extremely important and serves not the greater US, but the people who need to be heard,” added a third.

Other commenters agree with her decision to decline jury service, even saying they will do the same if given a subpoena.

“I have one too! The very day RVW was knocked over. I’m using this as a template because I wanted to write back in a similar way,” wrote one commenter.

“Best email I’ve ever seen,” said another.
