TikToker advises against using Home Depot Shed as a home

In May, a Home Depot product went viral: a tiny house that cost just $252 a month, or just under $13,000 if purchased outright.

Soon people from all over the internet were posting their stories about investing in the product made by Tuff Shed. One user, TikToker Langford (@langfordtreecare), has posted videos of his own version of the Home Depot product, showing his fully equipped new tiny home, which he says is used as a photo studio, among other things.

However, as videos and posts about these homes have gone viral, so has the backlash against them. Now, with the product, TikToker and musician @indubwetrust are sounding the alarm, advising users on TikTok not to invest in what they initially think is a bargain.

“I’ll say that again: don’t use Home Depot’s Tuff Shed,” his video begins. “Go to YouTube. Anyone who’s ever tried that tells you not to do it.”

Why? @indubwetrust explains: “Not only do you have to insulate, furnish, pay utilities, you basically have to pay for an entire house anyway – the horror stories from the people installing it don’t stop there.”

The problems with living in a Home Depot shed are numerous. First of all, Tuff Shed itself advises against using its products as homes.

“As sold, Tuff Shed buildings are not designed or intended for permanent full-time dwelling,” according to a Tuff Shed website. “Local building codes or other laws may also prohibit the use of sheds as dwellings.”

So is the product mentioned in the viral video no longer for salealthough there are numerous other small houses available on Home Depot’s website, admittedly not made by Tuff Shed.

Additionally, there are numerous upfront costs to buying a Tuff Shed and converting it into a home.

Langford notes in his original series that its total cost reached $50,000. Costs in this area come from insulation, decoration, compliance with zoning requirements, electrical wiring, plumbing, and more.

Others online are complaining about the process and Tuff Shed itself, noting poor installation, legal issues with construction, and other costs that quickly add up.

As one user noted on Reddit, the buildings are designed as sheds, not permanent residences.

“Tuff sheds are sheds. No habitats,” said user tonydiethelm. “A real wall has a skin, then a moisture barrier, and then a cladding. If you fancy you get a rain screen which is a good idea. TSs only have a T111 siding slammed onto the frame. Water will get in. It looks like the cabin walls have properly made walls, but the sheds are just… shed. there is more Much more. These things are SHEDS.”

On TikTok, users have detailed their own experiences with Home Depot and their thoughts on life in Tuff Shed.

“I worked for Home Depot for 9 years, they subcontract,” claimed one commenter. “Their installers don’t care and they won’t come to fix a fault and never buy their warranty!”

“I used to work at Home Depot, I can vouch for that 100%,” claimed another. “I worked for a customer. Service and the stream of complaints never ended.”

This is a common problem for viral “live cheap” videos, many users noted.

“It’s every van life, tiny trailer life,” explained one commenter. “[People don’t] understand how much work money and frustration actually goes into an uncomfortable life.”
