TikTok is predictably lusting after Evan Peters as Jeffrey Dahmer

As happened with Zac Efron’s Ted Bundy, part of TikTok has begun to romanticize Evan Peters’ Jeffrey Dahmer, despite the horrific (and racist) nature of his true crimes.

The family of one of Dahmer’s victims has already expressed the pain of the new Netflix series Dahmer – Monsters: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer has caused. But over on TikTok, a completely different reality exists where people feel sympathy for the serial killer, most likely because he’s played by Ryan Murphy’s regular Evan Peters.

His portrayal of Dahmer isn’t sexy at all, but that hasn’t stopped people (mostly young women) from publicly lusting after or feeling sorry for the man who drugged and dismembered several men and boys. The Dahmer TikTok tag has more than 1 billion views.

Elsewhere, people are editing clips from the series to look like they’re straight out of a rom-com, and the comments on a particular TikTok about victim Tony Hughes read like twisted fan fiction.

And then there are the memes that have emerged from the series; A popular trend turns a scene in which Dahmer forces a victim to watch a movie with them into a joke about “forcing my girl to watch my game clips.” Another POV trend is imagining being in Dahmer’s apartment.

Ross Lynch, the former Disney star who played the killer in 2017 My friend Dahmerwas also coveted on TikTok for his portrayal and Netflix dramatization in 2019 Extremely evil, shockingly evil and hideous was called out for turning Efron’s Bundy into a likable character.

But so many of these TikToks are detached from reality. Rita Isbell, the sister of victim Errol Lindsey, whose emotional courtroom scene was recreated in Monster, has a different perspective. In a recent Insider article, she accused Netflix of exploiting her family and other victims, saying that when she saw Dahmer in court, she “saw the evil. I faced pure evil.”
