An orthodontist whose methods of shaping the jaw line went viral on the internet has been accused of recommending a treatment that “put children at risk of harm”.

dr Mike Mew, who has garnered nearly 2 billion views on TikTok with his “meow” techniques, is facing a misconduct hearing in London.

Lydia Barnfather, of the General Dental Council, said he tried using “head and neck gear” to help align teeth and gave counseling and treatment to two children, Patient A and Patient B.

Patient A was advised to use upper and lower arch stretchers and wear a neck brace to “allow all 32 teeth to align naturally without the need for fixed braces,” the court heard.

He also suggested a lingual solution to the tongue tie that would allow her to rest her tongue on the roof of her mouth to strengthen the jaw.

She had forward-leaning upper and lower teeth, a recession of the lower front teeth, a misaligned upper tooth, and an ulcer. Patient B was left with a recession in his lower front teeth.

dr Mew will say there is evidence to support his treatment, the panel heard. The court adjourned until next week.
