Three teenagers charged in connection with massive fire in Orange – Boston News, Weather, Sports

ORANGE, MASS. (WHDH) – Three teenagers, aged 12 to 14, will soon face criminal charges in connection with a six or seven alarm orange fire that required the response of over 20 local fire departments to put out.

“I would like to thank the people of Orange and our surrounding towns once again for their support since Saturday,” said Chief James Young. “I also want to express our gratitude for the tremendous mutual support shown by our brothers and sisters throughout the region and state.”

The teens were identified Monday as part of an ongoing investigation by state and local officials. They are not identified because of their age. All three teenagers are subpoenaed for arson. A charge date has not been set.

The fire was first reported at 11:45 a.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames at an empty mill building and three others in the area. The response from over 20 regional fire departments was the equivalent of a six or seven alert fire, Chief Young said. The state’s fire brigade mobilization plan was activated, bringing in two statewide task forces to support local departments on the ground.

Crews worked day and night to contain and extinguish the fire and hunt down hotspots. Two people reported injuries that were treated at the scene but did not require medical transport. No one was expelled from the flames.

The State Fire Marshal found that juvenile arson contributes to dozens of fires in Massachusetts each year. About half of these fires are started with smoking materials such as matches and lighters. Officials are urging family members to keep these materials away from young people.
