Three chimpanzees shot after fleeing enclosure, but four remain at large

Four chimpanzees who escaped their enclosure are still roaming free at a Swedish zoo while three have been shot dead.

All seven escaped from their enclosure at Furuvik Zoo on Wednesday and wandered around a building in the park.

The staff did not have enough sedatives for everyone, so three were killed and one wounded.

The injured animal has not yet been seen by a vet as no one can safely enter the building.

It has returned to its enclosure alone, but the other three are still at large.

It’s not clear how the animals escaped, but the fence to their enclosure was breached.

Staff have tried several times to get the primates to return to their enclosures.

On Wednesday evening, they found that doing everything in the dark was “way too risky for the chimpanzees and the staff.”

They came up with a new plan yesterday – to distract the animals so they move into part of the chimpanzee’s house while the workers rebuild the fence to their enclosure – but that didn’t work either.

“Unfortunately, the chimpanzees did not move where we wanted and attempts to get inside the house were interrupted,” officials said.

By that time it was dark again and the zoo decided to wait until today to try a third time.

The zoo said: “We fully understand that many of you are upset, saddened and disappointed in us.

“We take full responsibility for the situation that has arisen. Our responsibility as a zoo park is to ensure the safety of people and animals in our park and this should not happen.

“These are animals that we know, love and care for so well, so this situation is incredibly painful. A pain we know many of you share.”
