[Thread] Former exec describes Amazon’s transition from Solar to HP/Linux servers in early 2000s, that risked bankrupting the corporate and laid foundations for AWS — I used to be at Amzn in 2000 when the web bubble popped. Capital markets dried up & we had been burning $1B/yr. Our greatest expense was datacenter -> costly Solar servers. We spent a 12 months ripping out Solar & changing with HP/Linux, which fashioned the muse for AWS. The backstory:
