Thomas Tuchel was noncommittal when asked if Armando Broja could be Chelsea’s centre-forward, saying his performances on loan didn’t prove he was good enough for Chelsea and his injuries wouldn’t improve his chances of breaking into the first-team.

With the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner this summer and without the arrival of a natural striker, Broja looks set to have a good chance of impressing at Chelsea this season.

The 20-year-old was on loan at Southampton last season, has scored nine goals in all competitions and has been a substitute for the Blues in both Premier League games so far this season.

However, he will not be involved when Chelsea go to Leeds on Sunday with a minor injury and Tuchel sounds a little frustrated with the striker’s fitness woes.

The Germany manager says the Albania international has a great chance to prove himself this season but has warned he must do just that as he has a lot to prove.

Asked if Broja could be his number nine this season, Tuchel said at a press conference: “Yes and no. We know enough about him but it’s one thing to play on loan and another to play at a club like Chelsea.

“He was injured pre-season and now injured again, that doesn’t help us to have a clear idea of what he can give us. I think it’s a great opportunity for Armando to make a difference at Chelsea.

Chelsea have been linked with the signing of a new striker, most notably Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but nothing seems imminent.

Tuchel is certainly keen to see more additions to his squad, knowing there are still plenty of games ahead as they compete on four fronts.

“I think we can compete with this group, but it’s one thing to compete once a week and another to compete 60 times a year three times a week,” he said.

“They need players fighting for their place and fighting for their minutes. It’s not just about tactics and team spirit, but also about the depth of the squad and the challenge.”
