Thomas Tuchel was furious with referee Szymon Marciniak after the Chelsea manager saw the Polish match official share a joke with Carlo Ancelotti following Real Madrid’s epic Champions League quarter-final win.
A chaotic battle was finally decided in the sixth minute of extra time when Karim Benzema scored his fourth goal of the tie, securing the Spanish giants an amazing 5-4 aggregate victory.
Chelsea appeared to have pulled off a remarkable comeback as Timo Werner gave his side a barely-there 3-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining as the Blues overcame a 3-1 deficit from the first leg.
Marcos Alonso was chalked up by VAR for a tiny handball offense just before Werner’s goal and Tuchel was annoyed that the referee was not asked to check the pitchside monitor.
He told BT Sport: “I didn’t see the disallowed goal. I’m very, very disappointed for the referee that he doesn’t check it himself.
“Absolutely disappointed feeling in both games it was 51 on the other side when all the decisions were made but that’s when you play Real Madrid in the Champions League. Bad luck today.’
Tuchel expanded on his complaints in his post-match press conference, revealing he was particularly upset after seeing Marciniak share a light-hearted moment with Real manager Ancelotti.
He said: “I was disappointed that the referee had a good time with my colleague Carlo Ancelotti. I know Carlo is a gentleman and a nice guy but when I went to say thank you for the match I saw him smiling and laughing out loud with the opponent’s coach.
“I think this is the very, very wrong time to do this after a final whistle and 126 minutes where a side gave their hearts and fought to the last drop.
“You go and see the referee smiling and laughing with the other coach. I think it’s very, very bad timing. I told him that and that was it.
‘Maybe I’m getting into a problem. But when you play Real Madrid you can’t expect everyone to have the guts [to make decisions]. I also felt the small decisions in the first and second leg today.
“I didn’t see the gate but I told him I was very disappointed that he wasn’t coming out and checking it himself. In a match like this where you have a line to call, you should be the boss and not leave decisions like that to someone in a chair isolated from the atmosphere.
“He has a certain style and certain things that he allows and doesn’t allow and he follows a certain line – so I think he should take responsibility and check it himself, then he could explain it better too.
“It’s just my opinion. I thought we deserved more minutes at the end because it felt like we didn’t have any minutes to play in the second half of overtime. Maybe it’s asking too much in matches like this against this opponent. We had it in our hands, and we weren’t lucky enough. It is so.’
