Thomas Tuchel admits Chelsea need more signings before the transfer window closes but says a midfielder shouldn’t be a priority after the club tried to land Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.

Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling made their full debuts for Chelsea in Saturday night’s 1-0 win against Everton, while Marc Cucurella was a late substitute and made his first appearance since joining from Brighton in a £62million deal.

Chelsea have also been in talks with Barcelona to sign De Jong and reports in Spain have claimed they have now offered €70m plus Marcos Alonso for the Dutch midfielder.

However, Tuchel believes Chelsea need to prioritize new acquisitions for their defense and attack rather than midfield.

Asked about any other signings before the end of the window following Chelsea’s win over Everton, Tuchel told Sky Sports: “Yes, if we can add, we’ll add.

“Maybe not necessarily a midfielder as a first option, but we’re open to anything.

“I think we can use new energy, new legs and fresh input to take us to a new level.

“If not then we will push this team but I think we could use a little more input and a little more quality. We’re in, but we won’t tell you [who].’

Jorginho’s penalty sealed Chelsea’s win against Everton at Goodison Park but Tuchel admits he was unhappy with his side’s performance.

“We’ve struggled to get points here for the past few seasons and we’ve got the points. A win is a win, it’s the most important thing for everything, but we have to get better,” said the Chelsea manager.

“We may not be at the highest level, we brought in players but they came late, the pre-season was a bit turbulent but the last week of training was promising.

“Some situations in the first half were really good and in the second half I think we just didn’t move the ball enough, with less movement we lost more ball.

“It was a slightly strange second half with no team rhythm and no breaks but we persevered and did what was necessary to keep a goal clean and from there we’re going from there.”
