Thomas Bjorn has been named Team Europe’s first vice-captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup by Henrik Stenson.

The 51-year-old Dane won the event three times as a player in 1997, 2002 and 2014. He also captained Europe to victory in Paris in 2018 and was vice-captain in the Ryder Cup four times previously.

Stenson, who was announced as European captain for the biennial event in March, said: “I’ve known Thomas my whole career. I trust him completely and I know that any advice he will give me will be honest and direct.

“He’s not going to just tell me what he thinks I want to hear and that will be important, so I’m delighted to have him as my first vice-captain for Rome.

“I will be relying on him a lot and am really looking forward to these talks.

“He was very happy when I asked him. He was very honored to be asked and delighted to be a part of it Team Europe again and part of the journey with the players.’

Europe will be looking to reclaim the Ryder Cup after beating the USA 19-9 in Wisconsin last September.

Stenson will reconnect with Bjorn after they played side by side at the 2014 Ryder Cup. While the Swede appeared as a player under him in 2018.

Stenson, who will take on US captain Zach Johnson, has a close relationship with his Scandinavian friend and still calls him “top dog”.

Bjorn, who has won 15 times on the DP World Tour, added: “I’m delighted to be part of the whole Ryder Cup experience again.

“I probably thought that was the end for me after 2018, but Henrik called me to talk about captaincy in general and that led to him asking me if I wanted to do another stint as vice-captain, which I agreed. I look forward to working with him.

“I think I can help Henrik outline what he wants to do with his captaincy in the future. I can always ask him the right questions and remind him of things to come that he may not have thought of.”
