This is what your work laptop says about you

A viral TikTok video about “what your work laptop says about your business” has sparked widespread debate about modern workplace culture.

The video, which has been viewed more than 6.7 million times, was uploaded by @liljehu this month and jokingly outlines the meaning behind several different laptops.

According to @liljehu, who produces satirical content for those working from home, the type of laptop you’re provided with for your work can provide insight into the structure of your business.

The video begins with @liljehu arguing that every worker with a Dell laptop should start looking for a new job since their employer is likely to have “cash flow problems”.

If you’ve been provided with a Lenovo Thinkpad, adds @liljehu, your employer will only see you “as a number solely because of your productivity.”

But if you have a MacBook Pro, your company “probably has some extra cash to burn and is spending it unwisely.”

The video was an instant hit, with thousands of commenters offering their opinions on @liljehu’s satirical interpretation.

Some users say they didn’t get a laptop at all.

“They told me to use my own laptop,” complained one user.

“I just started a new job and they gave me a DESKTOP,” added another. “For a wfh job. I was so offended lol.”

Others felt the video’s description was impressively accurate.

“As far as I can tell, SPOT ON,” wrote one commenter.

“Right on Thinkpad,” said a second TikToker.

But many seemed to disagree.

“Well, they sent me a Thinkpad and two extra monitors and a dock,” said one TikToker. “Seems good to me.”

“I work for a non-profit organization and I’m a registered nurse,” replied another. “The Dell is just good money management at this point.”

Even though the video was just a parody, many users saw the truth in the description. One user who claimed to own a Thinkpad said his company went so far as to block his access to social media.

“Not a single lie detected (not typed from my Thinkpad because TikTok is blocked there for productivity reasons),” they said.

The topic was so successful that @liljehu has since released numerous more videos detailing his thoughts on other laptops: If you got a desktop computer, your business is run by boomers. If it’s a Toshiba, you might be working for a “black market” company.

The Daily Dot reached out to @liljehu to inquire about his viral streak but received no response.
