Although the 96-year-old has had several opportunities to develop a more exotic palette over the decades, Queen Elizabeth II seems to have stayed true to British flavors.

When it comes to a lunchtime treat, royal chefs say she’s particularly fond of scones and chocolate cake.

As well as the sweeter dishes, the Queen is also said to be enjoying a range of sandwiches, one of which has been a firm favorite on the menu for more than 90 years, The Mirror reported.

Former royal chef Darren McGrady worked for the royals for almost two decades after receiving his formal training at the Savoy Hotel in London.

After serving the family for 15 years, Darren has since turned to social media to share some of the lessons learned along the way by posting several videos on YouTube.

He said: “The Queen was served jam pennies in the nursery as a little girl and has had them for afternoon tea ever since.”

He continued: “Basic, just bread and jam with a bit of butter – usually strawberry jam.

“We made the jam at Balmoral Castle with the beautiful Scotch strawberries from the gardens.”

Another savory sandwich the Queen is known to enjoy a bite of is a plain tuna mayonnaise – a staple for many Brits.

Owen Hodgson, a former royal chef, told The Telegraph that the Queen’s favorite sandwich is tuna mayonnaise.

According to him, even when preparing this simple dish, there are special requirements – her sandwich needs to be well buttered and served with thin slices of cucumber, topped off with a sprinkling of pepper.

Although the monarch enjoys a few other treats with her afternoon tea, lunch would certainly not be complete without some scones – and the traditional Cornish way.

Darren said: “She always drank afternoon tea wherever she was in the world.

“We had flown to Australia and stayed on the Royal Yacht.

“It was five in the morning, but it was five in the afternoon for the Queen, so my first task was to bake scones.”

In another interview, he also revealed: “When I started as a young chef at Buckingham Palace, it was fascinating to see how important afternoon tea was to the Queen.”

“Regarding scones – one day plain and one day raisins folded through.

“Also small baked goods like raspberry tarts and a slice cake, honey cream sponge cake, fruit cake, banana bread or your favorite chocolate chip cake.

“It would all be washed down with a deliciously steaming hot cup of Earl Gray tea.”
