This is how the overthrow of Roe v. Wade into the sports world

The 50th anniversary of Title IX was celebrated on Thursday. Experts | I Agree In discussions with Front Office Sports, however, that women’s rights were being attacked in other areas of society – the anniversary should therefore be understood as a warning signal.

This attitude could not have been more forward-looking.

A day later, the Supreme Court ruled Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey lifted. In his majority opinionthe court found that the constitution “does not protect the right to abortion”.

Depriving more than half of the US population of a fundamental right will also have a devastating impact on women in sports.

In September, a panel of 500 current and former female athletes — including soccer star Megan Rapinoe, Oregon basketball player Sedona Prince and WNBA star Brittney Griner — submitted an application meager in the present case to the Supreme Court.

The athletes “united in their deep belief that women’s athletics without the Roe v. Wade … and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey’s recognized constitutional rights could not have achieved her current level of participation and success,” the letter said.

Title IX goes hand in hand with Roe and Casey. All three were codified within two years.

“Without Roe’s constitutional protections of women’s physical integrity and decision-making autonomy, women would not have been able to take advantage of Title IX and achieve the tremendous levels of athletic participation and success that they enjoy today,” the brief said.

  • Without the right to vote, overall participation in women’s sports would decline, the brief said.

  • At the elite level, from the professional leagues to the Olympics, the successes of many athletes would no longer be possible.

  • People who could become pregnant may also lose out on the opportunities that sport offers indirectly, from scholarships to leadership and development.

The result is clear: no one can enjoy the full rights conferred by Title IX without the ability to make their own decisions using their own body.

And now, other right-wingers could be next.

Look no further than Judge Clarence Thomas’ unanimous opinion, which suggested the Supreme Court reconsider other cases, including the one upholding the right to contraception. For all of the reasons above, losing the right to contraception would also have a devastating impact on the ability of women – and anyone who might become pregnant – to exercise.

The court’s opinion does not immediately add legal firepower to attacks on the existence of Title IX, Dionne Koller, the director of the University of Baltimore Center for Sports and Law, told FOS. But the societal fuel is certainly there.

Nicole LaVoi, the director of the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sports, previously told FOS that cultural shifts towards oppression of women’s rights could fuel further attacks on Title IX.

“Having children has always been part of the narrative of women’s sport,” Koller said. “First, it was, ‘Because women give birth, they cannot and should not play sports because it destroys their ability to reproduce — which is their kind of God-given duty.’ And now we’re going to talk again.”
