This “iconic” Home Depot product gets an upgrade

If you had to list a few things you would buy at Home Depot, you’d probably rattle off paint, tools, building materials, and maybe appliances. What you might not immediately think of is a product that’s a bit outside of the home improvement arena, but has nonetheless developed a “cult following” among Home Depot buyers. Now the same product is getting an upgrade where you may be looking for specific locations. Read on to find out which promised purchase could soon become an even bigger favorite.

A few offbeat Home Depot products have been in high demand lately, including a giant crab statue. Back in July, buyers had a big day with the Colossal Crustacean Grand Scale King Crab Statue, available now on Home Depot’s website for a whopping $1,480.86. The reviews section was filled with sarcastic comments, with one shopper warning others that the king crab “doesn’t contain butter”.

But the giant crab’s allure couldn’t hope to match Skelly, the nickname for Home Depot’s beloved 12-foot skeletal decoration. The giant garden decoration has sold out every year since its debut in 2020. This year is no different as Skelly is currently out of stock on the Home Depot website over three weeks before Halloween.

However, there’s another iconic product that Home Depot buyers can’t get enough of, and luckily it’s not sold out. In fact, it’s getting an upgrade.

A true American staple, hot dogs conjure up images of baseball games and the Fourth of July. Costco’s food court is also known for its $1.50 hot dog combo, but don’t expect to find one if you shop for nails and screws at Home Depot. Still, at 17 locations across Chicago, Illinois, a hot dog cart called Fixin’ Franks might catch your eye.

Described as a “longstanding regional treasure”, the company was founded by Conley Shirley, who originally “sold lattes and cappuccinos” at the hardware store in the ’90s, the Block Club Chicago reported. But when Fixin’ Franks started selling hot dogs, the contractors couldn’t get enough.

“I think it’s a perfect match” Jordan Shirley, Fixin’ Frank’s manager, co-owner and son of Conley, said Block Club Chicago. “Hot dogs are a quick and easy meal for workers.”

According to the Fixin’ Franks Instagram page, their hot dog stands include hot dogs, Polish sausages, and Italian beef—all exclusive to Home Depots. As if this wasn’t unique enough, Fixin’ Franks just updated their signature product.

If you’re in the mood for upscale Japanese beef, Fixin’ Franks is for you. The hot dog stand is now stocking Wagyu hot dogs and bratwurst offered by Michigan’s Vander Farmers per Block Club Chicago. Regular hot dogs are around $4 at Fixin’ Franks, while the new upscale dogs are $8. According to Wide Open Eats, Wagyu beef comes from Kobe, Japan, and it’s particularly expensive because it doesn’t “build up intramuscular fat,” meaning it tends to be more tender and juicy.

You can try it in hot dog form at seven Fixin’ Franks Home Depot locations, according to a Sept. 28 post on the seller’s Instagram page. The dry run will take place at the Elston, Niles West and East, Addison and Kimball, Evanston, Lincoln and McCormick, and Mt. Prospect sites.

“It sheds light on the business,” Shirley told Block Club Chicago of the Wagyu supplement. “People who’ve shopped at Home Depot have always known us, and it was almost like a cult following. We want to be open-minded. We want everyone to come in.”

Hot dogs in Chicago are served after being “hauled around the garden,” which usually includes a poppy seed bun, yellow mustard, dill pickles, relish, onions, celery salt, and tomato wedges Good Appetite.

If you’re a local or find your way to the Windy City, you can try a Wagyu dog served in this signature style at Home Depot, but Shirley doesn’t recommend it with ketchup.

“I haven’t heard of anyone who doesn’t like them,” he told Block Club Chicago. “Wagyu is the new thing and everyone wants it. It tastes different than a typical dog. Every bite is full and smoky.” This “iconic” Home Depot product gets an upgrade
